A Summer to Remember – Free Summer Camp at Mountain Resource Center

By Ashley Boland, Marketing and Development Coordinator

Mountain Resource Center is excited to share that we are launching a new, free weekly day camp during June for local children ages 6-10 years old. Providing a free summer camp option for families in the mountain community has been a top priority for our agency. We know that families often experience increased stress during the summer months due to difficulties in finding and paying for childcare, and increased food insecurity from not having the meal resources that schools often provide.

The importance of this new program became clear when our camps filled up less than a week after opening registration. Our summer camp program will serve 53 different families, of which 22 are new to Mountain Resource Center.

Aside from supporting families in the community with free childcare, our new summer camp will offer a unique venue for growth; allowing children to become more independent and self-confident while also learning about fun topics and building relationships with other campers. Our new camp experience will provide opportunities to develop social and emotional skills, practice mindfulness, and explore art, literacy, and math.

Families who participate in summer camp at Mountain Resource Center will be surrounded by support. Each family will have access to our onsite food share and will receive information on other programming like mental health support and assistance with basic needs like rental/mortgage or utility assistance through our Case Management Program. Families will also receive an introduction to our year-round school programming, which includes parenting support groups, early childhood education, and cooking and nutrition classes.

Mountain Resource Center provides assistance and resources to local families in our community, and we know the importance of programs like summer camp. With the ongoing support of our staff, donors, and volunteers, we are fully committed and excited to be offering a safe and engaging summer camp experience!
