Mission & Overview
The Village Institute’s mission is to cultivate a multi-generational ecosystem that uplifts the power of refugee and immigrant families and brings them closer to their neighbors. Through interconnected programs focused on early childhood education, youth mental health and leadership, and family support services, The Village Institute provides refugee, immigrant, and first-generation families with pathways toward self-sufficiency, stability, and long-term well- being.
Who They Serve
The Village Institute focuses on women, children, youth, and first-generation families from immigrant and refugee communities. More than 17 countries are represented across the population it serves, including South Sudan, Ethiopia, Myanmar, and Venezuela. Located just east of the Denver border near East Colfax, the organization serves families located in Denver and Aurora.
The organization intentionally recruits staff from the same communities it serves, creating a trusted and culturally affirming environment where participants can receive coordinated, long- term support. Staff collectively represent more than 15 languages and cultures, helping families feel safe, understood, and connected to resources.
What Needs They Address and Why Now
Refugee and immigrant families often face significant barriers related to childcare, language access, mental health support, healthcare navigation, employment, and financial stability. Many families are also navigating the long-term impacts of trauma, displacement, and resettlement while adapting to unfamiliar systems and responsibilities. At the same time, federal and state funding reductions are creating increased strain on immigrant and refugee communities, with many families losing access to critical benefits and support services. Demand for affordable childcare, family case management, and culturally responsive services continues to grow.
The Village Institute addresses these challenges through three interconnected programs:
● The Little Village, a diverse-by-design Montessori-style early learning center
● Village Futures, which provides mental health support and leadership development for first-generation youth
● CARE (Community Advocacy, Resources & Education), a trauma-informed family support and resource navigation program.
The Village Institute’s model is deeply community-centered and intentionally designed to provide culturally responsive, long-term support. More than half of the organization’s staff members have previously participated in or benefited from its programs, creating strong trust and connection within the community.
The organization’s integrated approach allows families to access education, mental health support, family services, and community connection in one trusted environment. Teachers in The Little Village also earn early childhood education credentials while working there, creating pathways toward higher-paying careers and long-term economic stability for families.
The Impact of Funding
Impact100 funding would help The Village Institute expand its services and respond to growing community needs. Funding would support additional childcare scholarships and reduced tuition opportunities for immigrant and refugee families, allowing parents to work while their children receive high-quality early education.
Additional funding would also help expand the CARE program, strengthen family support services, and provide flexible emergency assistance for urgent needs such as housing support, medical bills, transportation, and immigration-related legal expenses.
Overview of Results & Impact
The Village Institute measures success through participant engagement, family stability, educational outcomes, and long-term community impact. Programs are designed to create long-term ripple effects for families and future generations by supporting self-sufficiency, economic mobility, educational access, and emotional well-being. Through trusted relationships and culturally affirming support, families are better equipped to navigate complex systems and build stability for the future.
Summary
As refugee and immigrant families face increasing economic uncertainty and reductions in public support, organizations providing culturally responsive and community-centered services are more important than ever. The Village Institute’s integrated, multi-generational approach helps families access education, mental health support, childcare, and critical resources in a trusted environment. A grant from Impact100 would help expand essential services, increase access to affordable childcare and family support programs, and strengthen long-term stability for immigrant and refugee families across the metro Denver area.
